Pair

Ah, a beautiful night out for menu club last Wednesday. Our setting was ideal, I thought. It’s our first month without Jane, and we had a truly relaxing, casual night out at this lovely little spot near my house.

Small plates and nice drinks, vaguely country French setting with wide open doors and adorable curtains, old hutches, soft lighting. One of Jane’s favorites. Sasha and Lauri enjoyed Seattle’s own new “Dry Soda” in lavender and rhubarb flavors. Delicious! Beth enjoyed a glass of cava, after a long week of trying to get going in her new business venture. Bubbly all around.

Sasha is looking truly wonderful, and has inherited a box of maternity wear from her department at UW. James leaves for a month in China on the first. Lauri had a peaceful trip to Hawaii for Nok’s grandmother’s memorial service, and Beth is enduring days upon days of power sanding as a team of people attempt to paint her house, supposedly. As of this post, it still appears that they are really only interested in removing the prior coat(s) of paint. No new paint in sight, here in the midst of Day 8. We did wonder aloud where Jane might be enjoying herself over on the other coast…

For food, we ordered cheese puffs (yum!), the pear salad, the beet salad, the brisket, the halibut, and the macaroni and cheese plates. We also split the apple tart for dessert. All were delicious. I love Pair. It’s very serene. Romantic. A great place for conversation. Unpretentious, tasty, perfect.

We’re aiming for al fresco next month, location TBD. Yay!

94 Stewart

For Jane’s final menu club (well, apart from guest appearances), she picked 94 Stewart, in Pike Place Market. Delightful. And not a whiff of its building’s former tenant, The Garlic Tree Restaurant. We all enjoyed the Urban Eats menu (salad, entree and dessert for $30): Sasha got the pork loin, Lauri and Jane got the hanger steak, and Beth got the salmon.

Beth reported on her possible new business venture. Lauri has joined the Capital Campaign for her kids’ pre-school (no catalog management required, but we discovered that they are nudists). Sasha looks fantastic and just barely pregnant; she eagerly awaits the end of the quarter at UW. Jane closed on her house and has handed over the keys. We’ll give her final send off next weekend at happy hour.

We had some discussion regarding films and television… Beth watched The Way We Were since our last meeting. We gave Jane parting gifts of Zagat’s for her new ‘hood, and a gift card from wine.com. Enjoy!

Sorry if my recall is not so sharp this month. We had a really nice evening, many laughs, and special attention from the coat check/water guy. He made an impression, particularly on Sasha, who asked him for her coat as we prepared to leave. He replied, “You can wear me home.”

No plan for next month yet.

Volterra for Brunch

Jane and I met for brunch on Sunday. Sunny, Ballard, Volterra. Can’t go wrong, really. It was delightful. We had a round of their Peach & Thyme Bellinis - delicious, though I’d like a larger portion for that beverage at that price.

I ordered Milano! Milano! — an herby bread pudding, topped with smoked gouda sauce, asparagus and 2 (poached) eggs. Jane had the bacon, avocado, provolone scramble and toast. Both were outstanding. The place filled up while we were there, but even then didn’t feel crowded. They have a nice space there, with sky light windows. Service did slow a bit when the full crowd descended.

We even took a stroll through the farmer’s market, looking for/at preppy boys. Few to be found, but Beth did buy some asparagus and some beets. Both are delicious. Thanks Jane! Hope Lauri and Sasha had a nice mini-break to Half Moon Bay!

Le Gourmand

We had some great buildup to this menu club destination! And it did not disappoint. The revived decor was so tasteful, so light and classy. What a memorable, fine evening — I hope this post does it justice.

Jane has sold her home here in Seattle, and makes her move at the end of May. That news, while sort of bittersweet, was somewhat expected. Then, Sasha threw us a GREAT piece of news!! She’s expecting, and is due in mid-October. We had much to celebrate.

Gio Ponti by Sambonet

And we had the gorgeous flatware to prove it. GioPonti by Sambonet. I found it online! Check it out! Posh. Sophisticated. Unlike the, ahem, ladies at the table behind us…

The platinum pony tail, the dark roots, the seriously thick makeup. Jane requested to have herself shot if ever seen in such a state. We can’t make any promises, Jane. Some people like the off-center high pony tail. (shudder)

For starters, we toasted to Sasha with drinks. Sasha had a cold water. Jane sampled the Côtes Du Rhône, Lauri had the very intriguing Barbapapa (Hanger One Lime Vodka, Cointreau and lime juice with rhubarb sorbet) and Beth had a Vesper (gin, vodka, Lillet Blanc, and a lemon twist). Don’t tell me I don’t do my homework, ladies. My drink, the Vesper, is the James Bond version, and Daniel Craig would have been a fine accompaniment. It was STRONG.

For first course, Jane and Lauri had the beautiful green salad. Beth had the salade composée, the favorite of our very friendly and amusing server. Radish, asparagus ASTRIDE (looking back, I think the server meant to say ‘BESIDE’, but he definitely did not) a goose egg that featured dandelion greens sprouting from the top. Like fireworks. I think we can all agree, it was very French and quite pretty. And totally delicious, with a mustardy dressing drizzled on it. The goose egg was sort of deviled (and mustardy), but quite a bit larger than a hen’s egg. Yum!

At some point during first course, we discovered why Jane loves Remington Steele, but is less keen on Pierce Brosnan, the man himself. Also, she’s a big Dennis Quaid fan, and suggested we only need to view The Parent Trap to find out why. It’s in my Netflix queue already.

A real Kleenex FestAdditionally, we learned that Jane is The FIRST American-bred patron of Le Gourmand to know (and love) Barbapapa, the European (Swedish?) cartoon of yore, the one after which Lauri’s cocktail is named. Growing up in Buffalo, NY has its perks, and one of them is being close enough to Canada to get their TV in the 70’s. We all missed out… MUCH like we’ve all been missing out on The Way We Were, Jane’s favorite film. So moving. So sad. She’s appalled at the lack of TWWW knowledge at menu club, and Lauri points out quite rightfully, and repeatedly: We are unfinished. Jane is still needed, and must return as often as possible for menu club.

For main course, Sasha and Lauri went with fish, while Jane and Beth went with game. Sasha had the Ruby Red trout in a spinach sauce. It looked fabulous and French with the trout’s head joining our table for our enjoyment. Lauri had a the delicious halibut - I think her sauce had nettles in it. Yes, nettles.

Jane ordered the lamb and it was truly amazing. You can tell Le Gourmand has fairly high-end purveyors of everything they serve. It shows. Beth had the pigeon partridge, and it was served with some astounding sauce that was so rich, along with roasted turnips. Truthfully, I was expecting a whole bird, but half was sufficient in the end. Like the trout head, the actual foot of the half pigeon partridge made the meal seem more… real. Our delightful server offered Beth a glass of some holy-cow-good 2002 red wine (a bordeaux?) that, he claimed, simply needed to be opened. It was “feminine”, never having touched oak, or wood of any kind, while aging. It tasted amazing and soft. He also brought roasted potatoes and spinach (or kale?) out for the table. Delectable.

In other news, Sasha told of James’ (now postponed) trip to teach in France this Fall, and although she does not appear to have gained an ounce, she’s purchased some clothes for her pregnancy… Lauri’s in-laws arrived in the afternoon… and we heard pieces of ‘the story of Lauri and Nok’ while at Stanford (and beyond)… Ellen Barkin was discussed. Beth shared some stories of screenplay class and her fellow classmates, difficult to age, but she’d say… 58? We spoke of our aging parents. Lauri has a few years before she can relate. Go Jan and Larry!

As we finished dinner, we noted other patrons in the small dining room. Jane had met a woman in the restroom with Dr. Suess red-striped socks with skulls on them. Nice! There was some sort of party of 8-9 people celebrating some sort of occasion with gifts… and there were the three bleached and blotted aforementioned ladies, of course. Also, there was a couple that included a 70 year old man with white hair and his much much younger companion, who sported bare arms and too much cleavage, and was uncomfortable doing so. All in all, a fun night of commentary.

Dessert was divine. Mille Foies (?), a truly out-of-this-world nougat ice cream, with nougat from Montélimar. Ohhhhhh. So. Good. We also sampled the profiteroles, swimming in rich chocolate that I personally could feel in my tummy for hours. So happy. This lovely evening was Jane’s treat. Her generosity and her knowledge of Swedish 70’s cartoons are unmatched. So kind of her, and such a wonderful evening!

THANK YOU!!

Etta’s

I did a solo outing last night, and decided to blog it.

It’s sort of like when you read a book outside the realm of a book club, right? Anyway, I’d been procrastinating something awful lately, and last night I finally managed to finish said task ONLY by promising myself a trip to Etta’s for dinner, if I finished in time. How did that carrot end up on that stick? Well, I was surfing… thinking I needed to blog the Cremant outing… and instead, went over to Seattlest, a blog I check a few times per week. There, lo and behold, were some Seattle-based James Beard Award 2008 nominees, including Tom Douglas. You’ll recall that I interviewed Tom for my script… and of course, the thing I was right then actively procrastinating on was:  my script.

The stars aligned perfectly when I followed the Tom Douglas link from Seattlest over to his site, to find out that Etta’s is doing Dine Around Seattle for the month of March. $30 for a 3-course meal, and a good one. The menu was posted, I saw the coconut cream pie for dessert, I made the silent deal with myself, and I was immediately focused! Straight to work at last! Pathetic!

Anyway, 3 hours later, I was done with the script’s latest hurdle, and out the door to Etta’s… on a Monday night at 8:40. So spontaneous! I would have called a menu clubber for company, but I figured it was too late.

The blue crab roll was fine, the black cod in miso-lemon broth was quite tasty. And the pickled bamboo shoot on top of the cod was amazing.  The famous coconut cream pie was ohhhhhhhhhh so good. Wow.

So, there you have it. Symmetry. Tom gave me help with my project back in October; I went and ate his food at a milestone in said project. I basically closed the place, since all other tourists patrons were gone by 9:45 when I finished… alone, looking out on to Elliott Bay and the park with all the druggies, wallowing in coconut and whipped cream, listening to Lyle Lovett on the stereo, thinking of my script on a damp and chilly Monday night.

Cremant

A Friday night menu club outing, how festive.

Cremant (cray-MAHN) was our destination, our first in Madrona. While it was lovely and warm, the evening had an undertone of melancholy… for Jane announced her planned move back East. We are all sad, though we are excited for her. I personally have wrestled the idea many times, and I have a great deal of respect for the courage it takes to make that call. Go Jane, Go! But we’ll miss you for sure. You, and Destiny. Sniff.

On that note, Jane totally won the style award Friday evening. That black and white top was kick-ass. Loved it!

As for the restaurant, our reservation was for 8:30 and we hadn’t ordered any food as of 9:15, so we had a bit of a rocky beginning. Then again, I was enjoying champagne, so it was not-so-bad for me. Did anyone else note the eager-to-chat gentleman at the next table? He and his party seemed to linger for quite a while. Anyway, one new-but-anxious-to-please waiter later, we did have some tasty French treats.

  • Lauri honored Good Friday with the beet salad, followed by the scallops…
  • Jane and I were much less-impressively-Catholic by ordering the pork/apricot/pistachio pate, followed by steak frites (Jane), and lamb shank (me). Leftovers for both of us! (I enjoyed my lamb again on Easter Sunday for dinner, with a nice polenta. Splendid!)
  • Sasha got the special, a delicious-sounding ravioli filled with a cod/herb/potato blend and a tomato sauce. Yum.

Jane and I had an excellent Côtes du Rhone with our meaty meals… and we all skipped dessert.

As for other news, Lauri’s back — or ribs, who knows? — continues to heal slowly and she and Nok had fun at the school auction, successfully managing not to win any items. Sasha and James head north this week for a few days to Vancouver, Tofino and Victoria on spring break. Beth is done with the first draft and just back from a trip to Bend, OR where she ran around in socks and sweats trying many beers and enjoying general silliness with cousins Richie and Peggy… it’s also spring break for her. Woo hoo!

I think the plan for next month is TBD — did we ask Jane to select a date and a place?

Skinny on Quinn’s

Seattlest reviews Quinn’s new lunch offering!

I thought we had a really well-priced dinner there in January. Split 4 ways, I think we each paid about $28? And I know we had drinks and split a dessert… perhaps the yummy waiter comp’d the sweets when we flattered him, not sure. Looks like we ordered well, according to the writers of the referenced post.

Pina Colada Cake

I found it! I found it! I found out where I had this cake, and it’s IN Seattle! What a relief.

Okay, so this isn’t exactly Menu Club information (yet), but for the longest time, I’ve been trying to remember where I ate one of the best slices of cake ever in my life. I thought it was likely a Menu Club outing, but, alas, I was wrong. It was a work-related outing. At Palisade. It was a dessert I ordered to be polite, on a night when I didn’t feel like enduring the in-town partners for another minute. Oh, it was such heaven, this cake. Suddenly, last night when I should have been slaving over my script, it just came to me. The dinner was about 3 years ago. I’ve had a lot of cake and outings since. But this one has haunted me for its goodness.

From the menu:

Pina Colada Cake
Homemade vanilla-rum cake with guava-orange filling, coconut cream custard, and tropical fruit compote.

Usually I head straight for chocolate, but this, my dears, is well worth a taste. If anyone wants to go to Palisade, just holler.

March 1, 2008

Good Evening, Ladies…

Since that is generally how the four of us are greeted when we sit down for dinner, that is how the blog begins. Lauri, Beth, Sasha, and Jane visit a different restaurant in Seattle each month, and this blog is meant to chronicle the evening. Food, life, trivia, whatever. I’m such a nerd.

Let it be known that we call it Menu Club because in a former incantation, we were a book club. Notionally, back then, we all read a book once a month and met at someone’s house for dinner. When that disbanded, a few of us decided to go out to dinner instead — and all you really need to read for that meeting is a menu. Hence, Book Club became… Menu Club.

If any of the others would like to be added as contributors (and I highly encourage you to do so), please just let me know. -Beth

Sitka and Spruce

A fun night, with good wine, great food, and intimate atmosphere. Very handsome waiter, in a Seattle sort of way (well, I thought so).

Tiny inside, with the lone menu on a chalkboard, in pretty script. Delicious French red wine (Lirac?). Totally yummy. For dinner, we shared 6 different small plates, at the suggestion of the owner/server guy.
1. Organic blanched carrots over watercress greens and mint with a super light hint of a dressing. (totally awesome)
2. Grilled octopus on tunisian flatbread with a sort of minty pesto. so good.
3. Ravioli stuffed with rabbit - very simple, just a touch of parmesean.
4. Polenta with hedgehog and chantrelle mushrooms sauteed, on top.
5. A whole trout that Lauri served and de-boned for us, very delicious… and finally
6. A hangar steak grilled and tender and with some more watercress and creme fraiche.

We passed on dessert. Lauri has been laboring over her auction catalog, Jane made a trip to Boston to see a friend in need, and she’ll be heading to Augusta, GA for a day at The Masters. Beth is working diligently on “the script”, and Sasha is looking forward to summer break!

Next stop: Cremant in Madrona
